Weapon Background

Special Operations Peculiar Modification (SOPMOD) was a U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) program managed by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) - Crane Division to enhance the lethality of the M4A1 Carbine for Special Operations Forces. The first SOPMOD accessory kit, Evolutionary Acquisition Block I Upgrade, was issued in 1997. This package saw numerous changes over the following years with the SOPMOD Operational Requirements Document (ORD) Amendment 5 in 1999 addressing persistent issues identified during a study by the SOPMOD Program Management Office that year. Plans for Evolutionary Acquisition Block II and Block III Upgrades were then created as early as 2001 to further enhance the capabilities of the M4A1 Carbine by 2005. However, only the Crane Reliability Parts Set and Close Quarters Battle Receiver (CQBR) met their schedules by 2003. It wasn’t until the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq that the capability gaps of the Block I Upgrade became more pronounced and a new SOPMOD sub-program was created with the Miniature Day/Night Sight (MDNS) Capability Development Document in December 2004.[1]

The MDNS Development sub-program was meant to update the aging technology of the Block I accessory kit items. This included the upgrade or replacement of passive day, passive night and active aiming solutions with new emerging systems. Many of these items were issued as the Block I Phased Replacements accessory kit (often referred to as Block 1.5) during the final development of the Block II Upgrade. The Block I Phased Replacements items were the SU-237/PVS (Trijicon ACOG TA31 ECOS), SU-231/PEQ (EOTech 553), SU-233/PVS (Insight M3X), SU-238/PVS (Insight M6X), and AN/PVS-17A Product Improvement Kit. The final round of testing for the Block II Upgrade was completed by 2007 with the final production down-selection of the Rail Interface System II (RIS II) program and cancellation of the Backup Iron Sight II (BUIS II) program. NSWC Crane had awarded three contracts for a second generation Rail Interface System to address suboptimal ergonomics when mounting issued accessories on the Knight's Armament M4 Rail Adapter System. Development of the RIS II may have also been influenced by the growing popularity of full-length rails in competition shooting at the time. Daniel Defense was selected for final production of the RIS II.[2][3]

The Daniel Defense RIS II FSP (front sight post) version was the first rail adopted under the Block II Upgrade in 2007. It served to retrofit existing M4A1 Block I rifles which utilized the then-standard 14.5” SOCOM-profile barrels with the A2 front sight base. The RIS II non-FSP version was later adopted within USSOCOM in 2012. While the RIS II FSP was fitted to existing rifles, the non-FSP upper receivers were newly assembled at NSWC Crane using 14.5” Government-profile barrels and the low-profile MK12 Mod 1 gas block. These complete uppers were then issued to SOF units to be paired with M4A1 lower receivers. M4A1 Carbines with the SOPMOD Block II accessory kit are referred to as the M4A1 Block II. Additionally, the 10.3” CQBR Block II upper receivers with the MK18 RIS II were issued beginning around 2010. The Block II accessory kit initially used the existing Knight's Armament NT4 suppressor and M4QD flash hider from the Block I accessory kit. NSWC Crane then awarded the Family of Muzzle Brake/Suppressors (FMBS) contract to the Surefire FA556-212 (SOCOM556-RC) suppressor and FH556-215A (FH556RC) flash hider in 2011. The standard M4A1 fire control group was also replaced in some capacity when USSOCOM adopted the Geissele Super Select-Fire Trigger in 2013.

The SU-230/PVS (ELCAN Specter DR 1-4) is attributed as the single most impactful item in the Block II Upgrade. The SU-230 features a variable 1/4x magnification that allowed for effective target spotting and acquisition in both close-quarters and medium-range engagements. Additionally, the issued Docter Miniature Red Dot (MRD) Sight provided the SU-230 an attachable sight for users that preferred a top-mounted CQB aiming solution. While it could extend the effective range of the M4A1 Carbine up to 650 meters under ideal conditions, the main performance contribution of the SU-230 was improved accuracy within 500 meters with the then-issued Mk262 77-grain ammunition. However, some of the initial Block II accessory kit items were not positively received. The SU-233 gun light was unpopular as it only provided 125 lumens at maximum output and used an incandescent bulb when LED weapon lights had already been introduced. It was replaced by the Insight WMX200 light around 2010. Despite using an LED bulb, this new light was also unpopular and the Surefire Scout Light (as well as older Surefire models) saw significant use at the individual and unit level. The later era of the Block II Upgrade was marked by this trend of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sourcing and contracts outside of the SOPMOD program. An example is the replacement of the SU-231/PEQ (EOTech 553) with the SU-231A/PEQ (EOTech EXPS3-0) as the issued Enhanced Combat Optical Sight (ECOS) in 2012. Ultimately, the flexibility of the M4A1 Block II and acquisitions outside of the SOPMOD program meant that the previously envisioned Block III Upgrade was never developed.[3][4]

The United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) eventually adopted the Upper Receiver Group-Improved (URG-I) in 2017. This new upper receiver utilizes a Daniel Defense 14.5” Mid-length Government-profile barrel and Geissele 13.5″ MK16 M-LOK rail; an 11.5” URG-I upper receiver was also adopted. However, the M4A1 Block II and legacy SOPMOD Block II items continue to see use throughout USSOCOM.

Character Design

SOP II is illustrated by UmiNeko, a contributing artist for Girls' Frontline during its early development. UmiNeko also illustrated 3 other members of AR Team. UmiNeko made comments on the official art book of Girls Frontline regarding the design concept of SOP II[5]:

"In a word: ravager. The whole design concept revolves around 'Modification' and 'Destruction'." (破坏狂。设计围绕着“改造”与“破坏”展开。)

"Even though the original weapon is based on the M4A1, a lot of contrasting designs were used to highlight and represent the concept of 'Modification'." (虽说真实型号是建立在M4A1的基础上的,不过为了突出改在给人的感觉,做了一些比较强烈的对比。)

"The weapon itself undergoes a lot of modifications in real life, and so the doll also received a lot of modifications on the concept design drawing board, such as the bleached white hair and self-attached Sangvis Ferri-made left arm." (由于原型来自过度的改造,那么本体的人形也一样进行了非常多的设计图改造,无论是染白的头发还是对于自主拆卸然后接上铁血的左手。)

"When it came to impression and personality design, she was developed with a young demon in mind, providing a sense of unrealistic impression. Hoping to give viewers a sense of 'Cute' and 'Scary' at the same time." (在形象与性格的设计时,把她想象成了一个年幼的恶魔来设计,能突出一种非原装的不真实感。希望能给看到的人一种可爱和可怕同时存在的印象。)

"The SF-made left arm was integrated into her body by herself in the story. It is unclear whether there are other models of arm she is compatible with." 铁血的左手应该也是剧中的她自己接的,其他量产型接的谁的手臂真就不好说了。

She uses her namesake M4A1 SOPMOD Block II with the Daniel Defense M4A1 RIS II Handguard, EOTech SU-231/PEQ Holographic Weapon Sight, Shieldshot Mirror Sight, Insight WMX200 Weapon Light, SOPMOD Gen 1 Stock, TangoDown PR-4 Carbine Sling Mount, and Lancer L5AWM Magazine. This configuration is changed in her neural upgrade to add the Magpul AFG-2 Angled Foregrip, remove the Insight WMX200 and Shieldshot Mirror Sight, and replace the TangoDown PR-4 with the CQD Rear Sling Mount. Additionally, her skins feature alternate configurations, though all of them retain the Daniel Defense M4A1 RIS II (most as the FSP version).

Trivia

  • M4 SOPMOD II and AR ST AR-15ST AR-15ST AR-15 are the only two dolls able to equip two accessory-type equipment pieces at the same time.
  • Despite having the ability to launch grenades in-game, M4 SOPMOD II does not have an attached under-barrel grenade launcher in her artwork.
    • This is rectified in the official manga where she is shown using an M203 under-barrel grenade launcher mounted to her rifle.
  • The Daniel Defense RIS II is designed to allow free float mounting of the M203 grenade launcher using hangers inside the rail. However, this requires removal of the lower rail section. M4 SOPMOD II would therefore be unable to mount an M203 as her in-game art depicts the installed lower rail section. This is addressed in the official manga where she is shown with the lower rail section removed and an M203 correctly mounted.
  • In her original artwork, M4 SOPMOD II uses the Shieldshot Mirror Sight which functions as a conventional back-up sight when locked into the rear sight position. However, her rifle does not have a front sight which makes this feature useless. Additionally, the sight window on the SU-231/PEQ is too high for the back-up sight position which would make it unusable with this optic anyways. This means only the actual mirror would be usable with this configuration.
  • In the official manga adaptation, the grenades used by SOP II are shown to be more akin to heavy artillery than the conventional fragmentation grenades typically issued with real-world M203s, creating explosions that dwarf warehouses and being capable of severely damaging Agent who was previously shrugging off small arms fire.
  • SOP grafting a Sangvis left arm to her body is possibly inspired by the modularity of AR-15 rifles in real life, and is likely a reference to the SOPMOD program which aimed at creating a modular M4 platform that could be outfitted for a variety of combat theatres.
  • Scaling off the size of the rifle in her Neural Upgrade artwork, M4 SOPMOD II would have a height of approximately 4'10 or 147 centimeters, making her quite small.
  • One of the picture shown by the haunted book appearing as the completion bonus for the Great Library Furniture set shows SOP-II looking eagerly at a recently captured Dinergate. This won't end well for the Dinergate.
  • SOP-II made her own M4 SOPMOD II Jr. in the gag anime, who made it into the game with her 2022 April Fools costume.
