Blazar Backscatter

Blazar Backscatter (耀变反照) is the name of a story chapter of Girls' Frontline that was datamined in early 2024, but ultimately went unused. The name of the event was found in the events list file, along with its logo and Live2D assets for a first-person scene showing William getting shot, which gave rise to the theory that this event would be the final chapter of the story. It was however not included on the 2024 roadmap[1] and the story event of December 2024, presented as the final chapter ahead of the closure of CN servers, was instead Convolutional Kernel. The CN servers would eventually come back online in July 2025, with the next story event, Roche Limit, announced in May.[2]
As part of the response letters of Convolutional Kernel, a message from 6P62 (who is used as an avatar of producer Yuzhong) read: “Commander, I was surprised you wrote me a letter! I’m touched… But make sure not to give my address to Kalina. Why? Well, didn’t you hear about “Blazar Backscatter”? And how I only wrote 6,000 characters in seven months before procrastinating… Who said games were fun?! Oh, so Kalina hasn’t reported that to you yet… Then don’t worry about it! I’m sure we’ll meet again in a world were you’ll find me in exile… I should get back to work, now!” It's unclear how seriously the part about Blazar Backscatter is meant to be taken, given the behind-the-scene information from the Frankfurt Battle Report and that CN servers would soon go offline at the time.
The Live2D assets were eventually used during the true finale, Quantum Fluctuation, in October 2025.
Trivia
- A blazar is a jet of nearly superluminal matter streaming from the core of a galaxy (which is in theory the accretion disk of a supermassive black hole) in the general direction of Earth. Backscattering means that the energy of the jet would be reflected back to its source. While none of the 2025 story chapters retained such imagery in their title, the marketing blurb for Virtual Pair referenced black holes, and the title of the Girls' Frontline 9th Anniversary expo was titled after a “return to the origin”.
