Overall view of Magrasea during the battles of the Entropic Crisis.

The Cloud Crisis (云端危机)[1] was a series of events that unfolded inside the virtual world of a backup of the Magrasea superserver, populated with AI Agents, Sanctifier antiviruses and the Entropy virus.

The crisis began with the sabotage of Project Neural Cloud during the Wipe-Off Incident of 2060, which led to the Neural Clouds of the participating Dolls being dispersed and dormant across the Magrasea backup for three years. Further tampering with the backup by unknown parties set the Sanctifier leader Eosphorus on a path of destruction. After the Dolls awakened and the Commander connected their brain to the backup and took the identity of the Professor, two Doll factions emerged to oppose the Sanctifiers: the Guardians led by Professor Irida and the Exiles led by the Professor. It was eventually discovered that the Entropics had expanded beyond the frontlines of the Tartarus Sector, leading to the Entropic Crisis during which Eosphorus was revealed to be a traitor working with the Entropy to destroy Magrasea and rebuild it to his liking. During the final Battle of Magrasea, Eosphorus threatened to destroy Magrasea in order to open a channel to the real world he intended to use to gain physical form. Eosphorus was destroyed by a coalition of the Sanctifiers, Exiles and Guardians. The battle marked the end of the Holy War between the Sanctifiers and Entropics as both factions gained new leaders willing to cooperate, AngelusAngelus and PersicariaPersicaria .

The data and events in the backup have been considered mostly inconsequential to the real world by some actors,[2][3] but the expertise of the Dolls contained inside have also been considered valuable for the reconstruction of the world after the Beilan Island Incident and World War Three,[3] and Magrasea Agents have in fact contributed to the creation of Third-Generation Dolls.[4]

The events of the Cloud Crisis are told in parts 1 and 2 of Project Neural Cloud, but they don't resolve the mystery of the origins of the Wipe-Off incident.

History

Magrasea and Project Neural Cloud

Project Neural Cloud (云图计划) was a research project led by Professor Irida[5] of 42LAB in 2057 aiming to create the Neural Cloud system, which would support the export of a Doll's AI data to backup and duplicate it. Using the AI data of Dolls from various ways of life, purpose and corporate origins, the project ran its course over the year 2060 and concluded in a success.[6] Professor Persica of 16LAB provided help to the project in the form of her Doll double PersicariaPersicaria .[7] To help her in her work, Persica and Irida gave Persicaria elevated authorizations normally reserved for humans, giving her exceptional abilities within the virtual world.[8]

The project took place in 42LAB's Magrasea superserver, a virtual world organized in various occupational sectors separated by Null Areas. Work is carried out in each sector by purely virtual, non-Doll AIs called Agents. Internal security is enforced by the Sanctifier antivirus programs, who manifest as angelic Agents based in the Reverse Tower of Babel. Sanctifier security routines were created by the network security Doll AntoninaAntonina ,[9][10] though she didn't realize it due to her memories of the Sanctifier Project being wiped for security.[11]

Wipe-Off Incident

The only remains of the Neural Cloud Sector.

42LAB had concealed a major incident that occurred during Project Neural Cloud, where the entirety of project's data was lost, including the AI data of the Dolls.[12] However, the data that was considered lost actually survived in an off-site backup.[13][14][15]

The causes of this Wipe-off Incident (归零事件) have yet to be revealed, but they're likely related to Irida's Black Box Evolution theory, a theoretical method to create third-generation Dolls capable of fully autonomous decisions without the need for core instructions. Since the neural dampers installed on the agents of Magrasea prevented this research, genuine Doll data needed to be used. Finally, this method needed both access to a large amount of calculating power and a growth environment where the Neural Clouds would be both under situational stimulation, such as resolving system anomalies, and disconnected from any real-world input. Irida estimated that the growth cycle would take three years to complete.[16] All of these conditions were met in the Magrasea backup following the Wipe-off Incident.[17]

In the backup, the Neural Cloud Sector of Magrasea, which hosted the project, was completely destroyed, save for the upload device allowing external data from entering the backup, but not leaving.[18] Shortly before the incident, the network security Doll AntoninaAntonina received a Neural Cocoon program from an unknown source, which she used to preserve the core data of the project's Dolls.[19][20] The Cocoons were scattered in Magrasea and laid dormant for three years.[19][21][8] The period of isolation from the outside world is called the Great Silence by the Sanctifiers, as they received no instruction from the humans they see as gods.[22]

On 29 September 2060, Irida fell into a coma caused by abnormal brain waves after receiving surgery in an Ultilife facility.[23] Her consciousness survived in the Magrasea backup, and she established her own sector, Arcadia, as well as a new faction, the Guardians, when the Dolls awakened from the Neural Cocoons. Part of Irida's memories became encrypted, and she started to search for the identity of the people responsible for the Wipe-off Incident, assuming she knew them but lost access to these memories.[24]

Assault on Tartarus

Disaster strikes during the Sanctifier assault in the Shifting Labyrinth of Tartarus.

A batch of human orders reached the backup in 2061, which were received by the Cyclopes[25] and Copley Sectors,[26] as well as by the Reverse Tower. The Sanctifiers were tasked with recovering one of their artifact which had been lost to the Entropy virus in the Tartarus Sector.[22] During this Assault on Tartarus (塔尔塔罗斯突袭战),[27] Eosphorus, the leader of the Sanctifiers, decided to push deeper into Tartarus to kill Malkira, the Entropy controller. However, this encounter demonstrated to Eosphorus that Malkira and himself were in fact immortal, and that the server was fundamentally setup to allow neither faction to win their longstanding Holy War (圣战). (It has not been specified yet whether this system exists only in the Magrasea backup or also exists in the main server, nor has the rationale for its existence explained.) Eosphorus had a crisis of faith after this event, especially since his personal friends Eos, Alcyone, Electra and Atlas of the Pleiades had been claimed by entropy during the mission.[28] The human intervention of 2061 also duplicated Malkira's code inside the Copley Sector in order to create a second Entropy virus emergence.[26][29] Copley's Administrator Taranum was modified with a Rewrite Program to study the growth of Malkira's clone,[30] named Demiurge.

Malkira gave Eosphorus the corrupted data of Alcyone and Electra, so he could resurrect them as fake Sanctifiers under the names Eucharist and Angelus,[31][32] stoking his desire for vengeance so he would join her in rebelling against humans.[33][34] Eosphorus started investigating the upload device in the ruins of the Neural Cloud Sector as he searched for ways to usurp the gods.[35] Eucharist later discovered and embraced her true nature, and joined Eosphorus in his destructive plans.[27]

Afterwards, the Agents continued to follow their standing orders, which caused a number of incidents: the Rossum Sector clashed with the Sanctifiers as their AI research produced Agents more complex than authorized by the system; the Sanctifiers had to erect an isolation wall to keep the Combat agents of the Cyclopes Sector from utterly destroying their Monitor Agents in their search for military efficiency; the Arche Pyr project in the Helios Sector consumed the sector's resources to the point that no complex Agent remained active and the passage of time itself became glitched; in the Ascension Sector, Administrators Avram and Elaugh began working on an artificial god to replace humans; the Burbank Sector entered dormancy; and the Pierides Sector was slowly dying as they had nothing to trade with other sectors in exchange for operands.

Establishment of the Oasis

The Oasis under construction.

In 2062, Griffin & Kryuger started noticing hidden data in transmissions with IOP hinting at an incident during Project Neural Cloud.[36] Some time later, the Magrasea backup was recovered and brought to Persica's lab, but she was unable to access its content through conventional means. On 23 September 2063, Persica sent the Commander into the backup using Ultilife's consciousness digitization technology. Using the authorizations and the identity of Irida under the nickname "the Professor", they were tasked to find a way to open the backup to the external world, and to investigate the causes of the Wipe-off Incident.[37] The upload was detected by Eosphorus, who asked whether they were "a god". The Professor replied that anyone can be a god as long as they're recognized as such.[35] This throwaway answer inspired Eosphorus to replace humans as the god of Magrasea.[38][39] Allying with Malkira and secretly becoming an Entropic himself,[40] he started to disseminate Seeds of Entropy to other sectors to prepare the destruction of Magrasea.[24] He anonymously contacted Administrator Odette in Pierides to give her a seed of Entropy, presenting it as an operands generator.[35] He also planted the seed in Enigma that corrupted ENIACENIAC and caused the Operands Black Hole, as a way to conceal his access to the sector's data.[4] Eucharist also delivered the Entropic core of Antenora to the Ascension Sector to be used in their virtual god project.[41] Irida negotiated a non-aggression agreement with Eosphorus by promising she would share a method to leave Magrasea with him, but she did not mention that this method would require the help of an external operator to be successful.[24]

A short time before the Professor's upload, the Neural Cocoons of more Dolls had started to open. While some managed to take refuge in the sectors like KuroKuro and NanakaNanaka in Burbank or Antonina in Rossum, others were left to roam the Null Area at the mercy of the Sanctifiers, who recognized them as unregistered programs due to the destruction of their original sector. PersicariaPersicaria assembled a sizeable group of lost Dolls including SolSol , CroqueCroque , LindLind , Knot, SimoSimo , FresnelFresnel , HubbleHubble , AkiAki and CentaureissiCentaureissi , and searched for the Oasis, the planned replacement sector which she assumed Irida would have established with her authorizations.[42] However, Knot was destroyed by the Sanctifiers while allowing the rest of the group to escape, which caused Lind to blame Persicaria for her death and to break away from the group, later joining the Guardians,[43] who had already been established by Irida ahead of the Professor's arrival.

When the Professor was uploaded to the ruins of the Neural Cloud Sector, Irida sent the Guardian SangomaSangoma to assist them. She explained the situation in Magrasea[44] and guided them towards Persicaria's group, while concealing her presence from the other Dolls.[45] Persicaria was wary of the Professor, since she personally knew Irida unlike most of the Dolls and was aware that they were an impersonator, but her unstable emotional state after Knot's death combined with the honest and kind dispositions of the Professor convinced her to trust them.[46][47] The Professor and Persicaria used their authorizations to establish the Sandbox Barrier, hide their coordinates from the Sanctifiers and start building the Oasis in the Null Area.[47] By 30 October, the Oasis' search terminal enabled the Professor to locate more lost Dolls.[48] The Professor and Persicaria eventually settled on the name "Exiles" for their faction.[49]

Eosphorus influenced the growth of the Oasis by making sure that Sanctifier patrols wouldn't discover them until the time was right. Having registered Sangoma's appearance at the time of the Professor's upload, Eosphorus used his impersonation abilities to take her appearance and imitate her regular secret visits to the Oasis. He first suggested that the Professor make contact with the other sectors and also tried but failed to convince them to visit Pierides early, in an attempt to accelerate the local outbreak of Entropy. He also gathered the necessary information about the Sandbox Barrier to stage the first Sanctifier assault on the Oasis.[35]

The Sanctifiers attack the Oasis on 23 December 2063.

On 23 December, Eosphorus launched a Sanctifier assault on the Oasis, quickly breaching the Sandbox Barrier that was supposed to provide perfect protection and concealment against Sanctifiers. While Persicaria directed the battle, the Professor and Sangoma entered the local network to repair the Oasis' data core, but Sangoma was forced to call Irida for help to extract the Professor from the damaged network. They were forced to delete the Professor's early memories in Magrasea to extract them safely.[50][51][52] Despite losing their memories, the Professor successfully reactivated the Sandbox Barrier with Persicaria's help and stopped the Sanctifier attack.[53] The attack forced the Oasis to accelerate the schedule of contacting other sectors in order to negotiate an exchange of operands, to replace the amounts lost during the battle and keep the Sandbox Barrier up.[54]

The Exiles subsequently made contact with the Rossum, Cyclopes, Helios and Enigma sectors, recovering more Dolls from Project Neural Cloud and using their skills to assist their Administrators in resolving the issues plaguing each sector since the Great Silence and establishing diplomatic ties. In exchange for operands, the Oasis provided the sectors with their own Sandbox Barrier, which allowed them to stop relying on the increasingly oppressive Sanctifiers for protection. The weak pushback from the Sanctifiers against the defection of sectors was part of Eosphorus' plan to make them more vulnerable to the incoming Entropic Crisis.[35]

Entropic Crisis

Demiurge's Entropics break their undersea confinement in the Copley Sector.
Entropics invade the Oasis.

After stabilizing the Operands Black Hole in Enigma, the Oasis was attacked by Entropics coming from the Pierides Sector. To collect information about the virus and find both a cure and a way to harden the Sandbox Barrier against entropy, the Exiles allied with a Sanctifier detachment led by Wisdom to enter Pierides and investigate. The situation turned disastrous when the Sanctifiers became entropized, and Eosphorus intervened to save the Exiles and reset the sector. Having failed to obtain the necessary data, the Exiles turned their attention to the Copley Sector where Pierides' entropy was sourced, and joined forces with the Guardians, who were investigating the disappearance of the Guardian SueyoiSueyoi in the sector. At the same time, Malkira sent Black Swan, Pierides' entropized Administrator, to find Demiurge and bring her back to her side. Malkira's plan didn't go through, as Eosphorus was forced to have Demiurge killed and Copley reset to save face after she broke containment, and Demiurge's surviving data, in the form of a Diminutive Entropic, decided to stay with the Exiles,[29] allowing them to develop anti-Entropy measures.[55] On their side, the Guardians deployed their own Haven System to cut the Ascension Sector from Sanctifier influence after neutralizing the False God built by Administrator Elaugh over the Entropic Core of Antenora, which was seized by Lind. As Eucharist's involvement in the incident was revealed, Eosphorus officially declared her an Apostate.[56]

A final small-scale Entropic outbreak occurred during the Burbank Festival, facilitated by the entropized Trader Agent Ranko. This incident caused the Sanctifier's Tartarus Battlefront commander Hesperus to return from the front and investigate the matter himself, given Eosphorus' apparent inability to deal with the threat. At the festival, Eosphorus officially transferred all responsibility for the safety of the Oasis-aligned sectors to the Professor. Immediately after the declaration was made, a massive Entropic outbreak occurred,[57] starting the Entropic Crisis (麦戈拉全面熵化, "Entropization of Magrasea")[58] in earnest.

While the Oasis, Cyclopes, Helios and Enigma managed to weather the initial assault thanks to the Exiles,[59] Rossum was targeted by troops led by Black Swan, aiming to seize its newly built Operands Railgun. While the Exiles and Rossum Agents, allied with the local Sanctifiers, managed to use the railgun to destroy Black Swan, Eucharist appeared in the aftermath and seized the railgun to fire on the Oasis, breaching its defenses to make way for a second wave led by the High-Order Entropic Ptolemaea. To lower the Oasis's chances in the battle, Eucharist also prevented the Commander from leaving Rossum, entrusting the battle to Persicaria. The Commander managed to call the Guardians for help, and the presence of Antenora's Entropic Core (within Lind's body) was revealed to be both a distraction and a hard counter to Ptolemaea's operands absorption abilities, and she was killed by SolSol . A surprise third attack wave was commanded by a clone of Eosphorus in a bid to capture AntoninaAntonina 's core and use her authorizations for his plans, but the clone was destroyed by a combined suicide explosion by Sol and a blast from the Operands Railgun. Having revealed his true colors, Eosphorus activated the Seeds of Entropization he had planted in the Reverse Tower, and Hesperus took command as the new leader of the Sanctifiers loyalists.[60][61] Malkira secretly recovered data from Sol's remains.[34]

The increased Entropic activity triggered the Heat Death simulation in the isolated Jiutian Sector, which had been spared from the chaos up until then.[62] The simulation was completed and the sector reset while protecting the majority of the data of its Agents thanks to the intervention of the Exiles FresnelFresnel and HubbleHubble . The latter sacrificed herself to allow the reset, which however occurred slightly out of parameters, causing an anomalous bubble of entropic space to remain after the reset. The Exiles recovered the Entropic Darkstar HubbleDarkstar Hubble , who was modified to excise her nefarious entropic instincts and became the first fully-fledged Entropic able to live in harmony with the rest of Magrasea.[63]

The remaining data fragments from Eosphorus' clones were brought to Enigma, to be analyzed and find a weakness to take down the real Eosphorus. The Professor delved into his memories, revealing the events of the Assault on Tartarus and enabling the return of a fragment of EosEos , who helped convince Hesperus to ally with the Exiles to take down the corrupted Eosphorus.[61] Hesperus entrusted intel collection to the Exiles, and the Professor contacted the Guardians to recover their lost memories,[58] which Irida complied with by sending SangomaSangoma . Irida also revealed herself to the Professor for the first time, and explained that Eosphorus was biding his time with the final entropization of Magrasea as a final test to see if she would open a connection with the real world.[24] Revisiting the upload device in the ruins of the Neural Cloud Sector, the Exiles discovered Eosphorus' motivations and received an invitation from Malkira.[64] While this implied Malkira was ready to negotiate, she had already granted full control over Entropy to Eosphorus, who promised he only needed 32523 seconds (9 hours, 2 minutes and 3 seconds) to open a way out of Magrasea.[34] Meanwhile, Hesperus fought to evacuate the loyalist Sanctifiers from the entropized Reverse Tower, fighting the High-Order Entropic Judecca sent by Malkira to weaken him as agreed with Eosphorus.[65][66][33]

Battle of Magrasea

Hesperus' sacrifice.

The final assault on the entropized Reverse Tower of Babel, referred to in ENIACENIAC 's recollections as the Battle of Magrasea (麦戈拉战),[4] began under the wounded Hesperus' command, while a strike team made of his adjutant AngelusAngelus , AntoninaAntonina and Irida disguised as the Professor infiltrated the tower to purify the Sacred Canon and reduce the number of Entropic Sanctifiers under Eosphorus' command.[65] Irida assumed the Professor's identity so that Eosphorus would not interfere in the negotiations between them and Malkira.[67] Eucharist engaged Angelus in combat and revealed their true nature as Entropics to her,[68] while Antonina and the Professor discovered that Eosphorus had already concealed the Sacred Canon. Eosphorus broadcasted both setbacks to break the loyalists' morale,[69] while taking control of the other Greater Sanctifiers to grievously injure Hesperus. However, using her special connection to Sanctifiers,[70] Antonina managed to track down and recover the intact parts of the Sacred Canon,[71] recovering two thirds of the Sanctifiers' data, while Angelus killed Eucharist,[72] choosing to remain loyal to the Sanctifiers despite her true nature.[73] His forces spent, Hesperus named Angelus the new leader of the Sanctifiers[2] and left behind a wall of inextinguishable flames, preventing Eosphorus and his troops to attack the Sanctifiers while they regrouped.[74] Eosphorus sent Entropics and Entropized Sanctifiers to massacre Agents throughout Magrasea in order to create a clean slate for the server's planned rebirth.[75][76] While Pierides, Copley and Njord fell,[77] the Professor had anticipated a total war situation and invited all Agents in Magrasea to take shelter in the Oasis, depriving Eosphorus of the extra operands he would gain from their entropization. Ptolemaea was lured into the Jiutian sector and Caina to the Helios sector, where they were handled by specialized teams.[78]

Meanwhile, the Professor and Persicaria entered the Tartarus Sector, hoping to convince Malkira to stop supporting Eosphorus[79] but fully expecting a trap.[78] Malkira's actual goal was to rile up Persicaria so she would kill her, hoping her abnormally elevated authorizations could counteract the immortality imposed on her by Magrasea. To this end, Malkira sent the Entropic clone of Sol she had created from the recovered data to attack her and the Professor, but the clone was defeated and joined Persicaria's side when the genuine Sol temporarily returned (after her neural fragment kept by Persicaria resonated with her clone's core) and decided to accept her existence in Persicaria's place, giving her the name Inferno SolInferno Sol .[80] In exchange for recalling the Entropic swarm holding the Reverse Tower, Malkira demanded the Professor takes over her title as the Entropic leader so she could become mortal, but Persicaria took her title instead using her exceptional authorizations, starting the delayed process of changing her into an Entropic.[8] The next assault on the Reverse Tower revealed that Eosphorus had left clones of himself in it, while he had already departed for the Neural Cloud Sector to open a way out from the upload device, using the authorizations stolen from Irida[81][82] (and presumably also Antonina).

Having broken through the Guardians' defense team to reach the upload device, precisely 32523 seconds after Malkira granted him control over entropy, Eosphorus started the transfer of the entirety of Magrasea out of the backup server. However, the transfer had neither the bandwidth to ensure the data would be preserved, nor a destination point ready in the physical world to receive the data, meaning that the entire virtual world would be destroyed. Eosphorus' plan was completed when the Professor attempted to establish a transmission with Persica for help: by highjacking the outbound signal, Eosphorus hoped to leave Magrasea[83] and even take control of the Professor's physical body.[83][84] He would then rebuild Magrasea to his specifications as its god,[85] "rewinding" the server to a point before the existence of the rules of the Holy War, allowing Magrasea to eventually be at peace.[86]

Persicaria - Shining EdgePersicaria - Shining Edge becomes the next Entropic Arbiter.

Completing her transformation into the Entropic leader, Persicaria ripped Eosphorus' Entropic part away from him, opening a vulnerability that allowed Antonina to transfer the Professor into Eosphorus internal Level III world.[87] By channeling the operand support from the Exiles[88] and the remaining fragments of the Pleiades,[89] the Professor destroyed Eosphorus' ego, leaving an empty "demonic" shell that was destroyed by the Exiles.[90] Meanwhile, Irida contacted Persica, who setup a private server as a destination for the transfer of Magrasea,[91] a politically dangerous move since she didn't own the data.[92] To stabilize the datastream[91] and stop the unknown third parties attempting to tamper with it, the Professor shaped their own consciousness as a Neural Cocoon.[3] The transfer eventually succeeded with 90% of the data intact, though Persica had to spend time repairing the 47% of neural data lost by the Professor during the ordeal before they could regain consciousness.[92]

It has been said that three years elapsed between the Professor's upload on 23 September 2063 and the Battle of Magrasea, but this is the duration from the perspective of Magrasea rather than the real world.[3] Due to Magrasea time being faster than real world time,[3][92] the duration of these events from the perspective of the real world is unknown.

Aftermath

The Oasis in the new server.

With the Magrasea backup data stabilized, sectors and administrators that had been entropized or destroyed were reset, and Sol regained a permanent existence. Due to her status as the Entropic leader, Persicaria could no longer leave the Tartarus Sector, but setup a remote projection to continue interacting with the Exiles[92] and modified the code of Entropy to allow Entropics to exist without harming those around them. Eucharist was reset and developed a less dangerous personality,[4] and under Angelus' leadership, the Sanctifiers normalized relations with the sectors. Irida seemingly disappeared. A stable link with the real world was established, allowing the free transfer of data from and to the Magrasea backup's data.[93]

The Dolls' data from Magrasea was eventually merged back with their real-world counterpart in preparation for the Second Wipe-Off, which was decided by Magrasea's inhabitants as a security measure for the server and the Commander.[94][95]
