The Girard Group (吉拉尔集团) was a member of the Orlog Conglomerate[1] and a powerful industrial group led by the Girard family. It was involved in the production and research of a variety of products, spanning consumer to military market, and has also established charitable foundations. The company became politically influential in the Odesa White Zone due to their involvement in the Purification Project, and aimed to expand its influence to other safe zones in Eastern Europe.[2] Girard was also the lead producer of Third-Generation Dolls,[3] such as Darture and Sextans, the latter being considered their finest product,[4] while Igla was considered the strongest Third-Generation Doll yet.[5]

Monopoly over key technologies for the Conglomerate's projects caused the Girard Group to be cast out of the Orlog Conglomerate in 2074. Operation Xyster and the disaster in Lviv caused by Project Eden marked the downfall of the Group's dominance and reputation.

History

Origins

The Girard Group was created in Odesa[2] and grew from a small company to a major group by contributing vehicles to the Purification Project,[6] eventually taking over the entire process.[7] By 2074, the Group was led by Rurik Girard, who was also a legislator and a powerful political figure of Odesa.[2] Bolstered by strong public support,[6] Odesa slowly fell under the secret control of Girard.[8][9] After they completed the purification of the region,[7] Girard's jurisdiction over Odesa expired, but they applied to keep administrative authority.[8] Statesec suspected that Girard's corporate armed forces would attempt to take control of the city, so NOMFA was sent to investigate the group.[10] In 2072, NOMFA also started investigating members of the Orlog Conglomerate for suspected collaboration with the tech-cult Paradeus.[11]

Indeed, Paradeus and the Girard Group had been working together on Project Eden. Started in 2064 by the young Orphelune Girard,[12] Rurik's niece,[13] based on a vision of Nirvana she experienced during the Battle of Frankfurt,[14] Eden had received the support of Paradeus scientist Chiloveig on the recommendation of Paradeus leader William, who asked Chiloveig to exploit Orphelune for his own plans.[15] Orphelune developed Eden as a technology exploiting the ability of plants to absorb Collapse particles to produce high volumes of electricity while decontaminating entire regions,[16] but Paradeus' true goal was to use this energy source to power a gate to Nirvana.[17]

Around 2071, the Girard Group stole the research of Persica and 16LAB on Third-Generation Dolls[18] as well as Remolding Pattern.[19] Two Third-Gen Dolls created by Girard, Darture and Sextans, became involved in Orlog's mysterious “Horoscope Program”,[20][21][22] and Rurik also claimed his company was necessary for Orlog's Project Lullaby to be completed.[23][24] Not limited to Third-Generation technology, the base layer of other Girard Dolls was also based on stolen 16LAB tech, making them similar to IOP products.[25][26] Girard lent Third-Generation Dolls to other Orlog members, notably to Cecht FABN. Despite being proud of his monopoly over this technology, Rurik was unimpressed by the field performance of current Third-Gen Dolls[6] and eager to improve them, but was frustrated by the Conglomerate's order to maintain a strict cap on their production.[27] Girard's Third-Gen Dolls were considered vastly inferior to those produced non-commercially by 16LAB.[4]

Rurik's arrogance eventually led to him being considered a liability by the rest of the Conglomerate, who tasked Winfried Zimmerman from Cecht FABN with taking Rurik and the Girard Group down. Cecht FABN discreetly leaked information about control over Odesa to the city's Chief,[28] including their illegal armed forces and manipulation of the city's finances, revealing that Girard's generous and publicized initial contracts had discreetly turned into costly maintenance in half of the city's infrastructure, increasing expenses while development slowed down. The Chief kept his investigation secret to keep Girard from retaliating[9] and eventually located Girard's underground labs. However, he had not taken enough precautions, and Cecht FABN cut him off before Rurik could find about their involvement in the investigation.[28] Cocoon warned Rurik that the Chief was about to share his results with NOMFA, in response Rurik hurriedly transferred the Third-Gen Dolls control servers containing evidence from his headquarters to a secret lab and sent Sextans to assassinate the Chief, but as would later be discovered, she was photographed by a passing drone.[9] Cecht FABN determined to manipulate NOMFA into taking down Rurik next.[28]

Odesa Incidents

Over the same period, the Girard Group issued TASK-3115, a B.R.I.E.F. bounty hunting contract consisting of delivering the box secretly containing Helena to Darren Claude in Odesa.[7] NOMFA Councilor Kalina secretly arranged for the contract to be fulfilled by the Commander in order to bring the box to her in ODE-01.[29] Claude deployed illegal armed automatons in the city in an attempt to recover Helena, causing heavy damage for which Girard had to take the blame after NOMFA proved they owned the robots.[30][31] The incident caused Girard to lose their bid to officially administer Odesa, but they hoped to effectively retain control by putting Rurik as the next Chief of the city.[8] During the incident, Sextans impersonated the dead Chief and sent the local police to arrest Kalina and hamper NOMFA's investigations, accusing her of causing the automaton rampage, but she was quickly cleared of all charges. While Sextans' murder of the Chief was eventually proven, it wasn't established that she was under Girard's control.[32][8]

Using his authority in Odesa combined with the Conglomerate's reach, Rurik continued to interfere in NOMFA's investigation of Girard's conspiracy to take over the city,[33] even using Heli to change public records,[34] but NOMFA eventually discovered the underground lab housing the Third-Generation Dolls servers[35] by following clues planted by Cecht FABN. Darture, who intended to break free of Girard's control,[28] goaded the NOMFA Dolls into destroying the control servers,[18][36] also allowing Cecht FABN to steal Girard's data[28] and cause Girard equipment in ODE-04 to go haywire, lessening public support for the company.[28][37] Girard representatives blamed an unknown actor for spreading viruses targeting their equipment,[37][23] and public outrage quickly ceased.[38]

As stock price failed while fines and compensations increased, Girard's finances strained and the Families of the Conglomerate reneged on their promise of support. Rurik extorted real estate from Cecht FABN to sell it and quickly acquire liquidity,[23] which proved to be a trap: the vaccine factories transferred by Cecht FABN to Girard were involved in the production of illegal vaccines, and the Girard Group was summoned to court[24] and lost the support of the Conglomerate.[24] In retaliation, Rurik activated a backdoor program in every Girard system in Odesa, shutting down most equipment while causing security droids to go berserk, plunging the city in chaos to cover his escape. The complete shutdown also impacted the cooling systems of the Selene Experimental Power Plant of ODE-07, threatening to completely destroy the city. URNC forces in the city organized a counterinsurgency response called Operation Xyster.[39] Rurik was assassinated by Darture and Groza? while attempting to escape in his private jet,[40] later investigation concluded he died in the plane's crash.[41] R&D Division director Holtz initially tried to pass the incident off as a continuation of the conspiracy involving viruses targeting Girard robots.[42] The incident has been called the "Girard insurgency",[41] a "robot uprising"[42] and a "Doll insurgence".[11]

Soon after the incident, the government of Odesa publicly reneged the Girard Group in an attempt to prove their good will to the URNC despite letting the company control the city. The Group admitted to charges of illegal operations, possession of lethal private armed units, obstruction of justice, bribery, murder, assault and intimidation, and also to owning Sextans at the time of the previous Chief's murder. The fall of many politicians related to Girard gave way for the ascension of Zimmerman as interim Chief.[41] Additional charges were brought when Griffin & Kryuger's Frostfall squad raided a private yacht owned by Holtz and obtained proof that they concealed illegal Doll gladiatorial arenas and seized bribery records of government officials.[26] Though the factories were originally Cecht FABN's, Girard was blamed for the outbreak of fake vaccines that occurred in the region afterwards.[43][44] Investigation of the fake vaccines led NOMFA to identify a Paradeus base concealed in a Girard Group clean energy and Collapse radiation cleanup research base in Lviv.[45]

Lviv Incident

With Rurik's death, a new chairman of the board of the Girard Group was appointed,[42] Rurik's brother[13] and Girard CEO Oleg Girard.[46] To salvage the Group's reputation and market share, Oleg organized a tech summit in Lviv where his daughter Orphelune Girard would present the results of her clean energy technology, Project Eden.[47][48][49] Meanwhile, NOMFA prepared the evidence gathered mainly from the investigations into Girard to file a lawsuit against the Orlog Conglomerate in the High Court of the Eastern European Administrative Region of the URNC,[11] intending to take down the majority of Paradeus' support with it.[50]

Elements in Girard supported the completion of the true goal of Project Eden. Without Oleg's knowledge and under the pretense of a peacekeeping intervention,[51] teams led by Igla attempted to recapture Helena, who was protected by Task Force DEFY[52][53] until her capture by Paradeus.[54] Eager to protect himself, Oleg gave NOMFA all the data related to the automaton insurgence and vaccine incident in Odesa, as well as information about Project Eden, in exchange for NOMFA's protection. But by agreeing to order the cancellation of Eden's launch a few hours away, Oleg triggered a reaction from the Paradeus elements in the Group. Invoking a "Loyalty Agreement" broken by Oleg, Girard security forces took him and NOMFA personnel hostage to ensure the completion of Project Eden.[55] Oleg was killed when URNC troops broke into the building.[56]

After receiving information about Eden's true goals from DEFY, the Commander organized a raid on Girard's Lviv HQ,[57] but was beaten to the punch by URNC troops also sent to stop the launch of the project.[56] Igla brought Orphelune to Chiloveig's underground lab to complete the project, perceiving it as the only chance to prove the Girard Group's technology to the world and salvage Orphelune's work. Having learned the truth about the project, Orphelune refused to continue, and Chiloveig started the project herself,[58] causing the appearance of a gate to Nirvana and widespread destruction throughout the city.[59][60]

The incident came to a close when Orphelune entered Nirvana and caused a reality correction event[61][62] that retroactively caused her own death ten years prior and undid most of the damage to Lviv, including her father's death. The correction event also made Oleg the leader of Project Eden instead of Orphelune.[63] The nearly destroyed Igla, considered "the final legacy of the Girard Group", was acquired by Zimmerman and passed on to the URNC.[64] The same elements of the URNC had entrusted Zimmerman with the continuation of Eden and preventing the complete collapse of the Girard Group.[65]
