Not to be confused with the character Cocoon and the side-story Butterfly in a Cocoon.
Project Cocoon (茧计划, occasionally translated “Operation Cocoon”) was a research project led in the 2060s by Paradeus, aiming to creating a “key” to Relic Technology by creating an artificial fully-immune individual. The operation involved the mass murder of populations in Central and Eastern Europe with Iaso's Box dirty bombs to identify immune individuals, and the abduction, cloning and modification of humans into Nytos. Cocoon was eventually stopped during the Battle of Frankfurt, where Paradeus was nearly destroyed, later focusing their efforts on the exploitation of Boojums and the Helena entities.
Operation Cocoon is first discussed in Mirror Stage and remains relevant for the remainder of the story of Girls' Frontline.
Frankfurt Cocoon
Held in Frankfurt under Hebe's command,[1] this project involved the iterative cultivation of three Nyto Virtual Cognition Images, one of which could evolve into a fully-immune mind.[2]
The woman who served as their basis was captured by Paradeus after they used Iaso's Boxes in the area where she lived. Due to being an ELID semi-immunosome, she was the only survivor, and William, mistaking her for a pan-immunosome who could be the perfect vessel for reviving Lunasia, abducted her for his cloning experiments.[3] Close to 11,000 clones of the woman were created throughout the experiment.[4][5] The huge number of “waste products” were used to produce regular Nytos or converted into bioenergy to run the Lake of Cognition.[1]
Three Nytos made from redundant memories of the original subject in the Lake of Cognition were made into intertwined subjects whose VCIs would always return to their shared “cocoon” on death: Machlian, Morridow and Badbsca. Machlian refused to cooperate and had to be forced to dwell in her cocoon by Badbsca.[6] A particularity of the Cocoon Nytos was that they harbored specific desires beyond simply following orders.[7] When Machlian ran away from Paradeus, Badbsca's cocoon was damaged again after suffering from several failures. Since the original experiment was only considered a backup plan, Morridow was diverted to the Berlin Cocoon,[1] and William secretly promised he would kill Badbsca and let Morridow become the only member of the trio become fully-immune if she could complete her mission.[7] Morridow herself was pursuing other ways to become perfected after losing faith that the conjoined cocoons could evolved into a fully-immune individual, but she agreed to track and kill Machlian for Badbsca, who still held hope to see the experiment through if she could be recaptured.[2]
During her captivity under the Commander, Morridow made a deal with M4A1 to sabotage the Lake of Cognition and the Berlin and Frankfurt Cocoons in exchange for the right to merge with M4 on her quest for perfection.[7] When William operated on Morridow as part of her upgrade, she absorbed Machlian and Badbsca's cocoons.[8] The remains of Badbsca's cocoon were used by Hebe as a bait for the virus she infected HK416 with during Operation Adrasteia.[9]
Berlin Cocoon
Due to the instability of the Frankfurt Cocoon, Laplace ordered to start another branch of the project in Berlin, where they focused on obtaining fully-immune individuals by using Iaso's Boxes instead of cultivating a few Nytos. William placed the Berlin Cocoon under Morridow's orders,[1] and the German government provided the necessary plants for their production.[10] After using them in a few small-scale attacks,[11] and the plan was for the Iaso's Boxes to be activated when the day changed from 3 to 4 October 2064, at the start of Unity Day.[12] Less than two weeks before the agreed time,[13] the Commander learned about Project Cocoon from Machlian,[14] and succeeded in disarming the bombs planted in the city's metro and quarantine wall,[15][16] only failing to disarm the bombs in the nearby community of Bohnsdorf[17] and at the Berlin prison.[18] The project was definitely interrupted when Morridow was captured,[19] more Iaso's Boxes stockpiles were seized[20] and outbound shipments to the KCCO were intercepted.[21]
After the loss of their HQ of Avernus during the Battle of the Dead Sea, Paradeus refocused their plans for the Iaso's Boxes in Frankfurt, but Cocoon suffered another setback when SMG ErmaErmaErma destroyed their connection to the Lake of Cognition. With two weeks left before their deadline to complete the project, Nemhran ordered to concentrate all Paradeus assets in Frankfurt to bolster the production of Iaso's Boxes and see the project through.[22] By completing the Frankfurt Cocoon, Nemhran would create a replacement for the lost channel to the Lake of Cognition and allow for the completion of Laplace's experiment.[23] The cocoon left behind after producing Lunasia's final vessel was intercepted by Amaris during the Battle of Frankfurt and combined with her own ability to steal data for herself and the “Lunasia” seal left by Erma to create a way to prevent Lunasia's resurrection.[24] With the assassination of Laplace, the Prometheans considered that Project Cocoon had been terminated.[25]
